Lukas Bury, based in Reykjavik (b. 1991, Germany) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Reykjavík and member of the artist duo Austur-Íslendingar with Weronika Balcerak.
Since graduating with an MA from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2020, he has consistently exhibited in Iceland and abroad. His practice engages themes of migration, liminality, and cultural exchange, drawing from his own background as a second-generation Polish immigrant in Germany and now as an immigrant in Iceland.
Lukas studied in the MA program at the Listaháskóli Íslands, the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan.
Bury’s works span painting, video, performance, and collaborative projects. A notable highlight was his participation in D-Vitamin (Reykjavík Art Museum, 2024), where his video installation with Balcerak was presented in a prominent space, effectively functioning as a solo presentation. He has also exhibited at institutions including Hafnarborg, the Living Art Museum (Nýló), Reykjavík Art Festival, and Gallery Þula. He also participated in the 11th festival of Ephemeral Art Contexts in Sokołowsko (2025), the Reykjavik Arts Festival (2020), and the Plan-B Art Festival in Borgarnes (2020).
Beyond his studio practice, Bury is deeply active in Iceland’s cultural field. He has served on the board of the Living Art Museum (2021–2025), where he has curated, evaluated exhibition applications, and managed international collaborations. Lukas teaches part-time at the Iceland University of the Arts and Myndlistaskólinn í Reykjavík and co-runs Myndlistarvöruverslunin (artsupplies.is), an artist-run store with art supplies in Reykjavik, Iceland.
