The GDR never existed, oil on linen, 130 x 150 cm, 2019
Probably in the last days of its’ existing someone wrote The GDR never existed on the Berlin wall and it turned out to be a prophecy about how the historical politics about Germany-East will look after its’ shutdown. That quote is scratched into the painting with the same title. It represents the former Palace of the Republic in front of the Fernsehturm. In the early 2000’s the decision of tearing the Palace down was made, and the Berlin Palace, the former residency of the Hohenzollern dynasty will be re-erected. It is a meaningful example of the selective approach on history, where a symbol of one oppressive system is replaced by one from another autocratic regime in a democratic society.
